“Parenting in Recovery: Helping Our Clients Restore Their Parenting Role”

Healing the parent-child relationship is essential and necessary for the benefit of the family. The emphasis of this workshop is to increase parenting skills, provide support, and help recovering parents recognize the needs of children during different stages of development (0 to adulthood), without neglecting their own healing and recovery process.


Laura Garcia, MAAPS, CADC, PES is the Director of Clinical Programs for the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center in Chicago, Illinois. Her work experience includes working with men and woman living with a substance use and/or mental health disorder, and counseling children who experienced domestic violence and sexual abuse. She has worked for DHS/DASA, as a Substance Abuse Program Monitor and inspected providers statewide. She holds a Master of Arts in Applied Professional Studies from DePaul University and is a Certified Parenting Education and Support Instructor. She has completed the forty-hour Domestic Violence training and forty-hour Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention Training. She is currently a student at Governor State University, working on a second Master of Arts in Counseling, her LPC, and is an ICB Board Member.
